Experience of Design Competitions with YAB Corporation

Three months ago, my great friend and architect Leandro from Spain, contacted YAB Corporation to propose the opportunity to collaborate with his team in the competition for the design of a new school of music in the Basque Country. With the unconditional support and enthusiasm that characterize my boss Mitsuru-san, we got down to work. This project would become in my first design competition participation as a member of YAB Corporation, so that the motivation was even higher if that’s possible.

Our coordination with Leandro and his team has been very effective and successful. From Spain, they were responsible for the design and integration of the building with the environment, circulation, structure and distribution of the program. And from Japan, we managed to care and consider all aspects to ensure the proper acoustic conditions for each space.

Acoustic design criteria considered influence significantly on the acoustic quality of the Concert Hall. It contributed in the achievement of promising results of acoustic parameters such as Clarity (C80), Definition (D50), Strength (G) Early Decay Time (EDT), etc. Diffusion in walls and ceiling reduced the reflexions by scattering instead of absorbing them.  Furthermore, the variation of distances between the ceiling and the wooden slats, helped to reduce the flutter echo and eliminate the energy concentration in narrow frequency bands.

These criteria and many other have created a unique and unprecedented acoustic space. We are proud of the design and we think that the result has covered our expectations.

YAB Corporation support and guidance to students of architecture of Tokyo Institute of Technology in the annual competition of architectural acoustic design “Newman Student Award Fund”, arose from the request of the architect and professor Mr. Yasushi Shimizu. Mr. Shimizu, has a strong reputation in the world of architectural acoustics, and has distinguished for his participation in the acoustic design of the New Yamaha Hall in Ginza.

The design competition involved the design of a performance venue (2000 seats) addition to a casino and hotel facility in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The students design was based on the recreation of an enclosed space that reminds to an open and wide space. Furthermore, students had to face the acoustic problems due to the noise of cars, boats and planes that surround the place. They could solve this big challenge with great ideas and solutions such as acoustic bass traps facility that help in the acoustic insulation of environmental noise. In addition, they created an absorption variable box with double glass that opens and closes depending on the type of show to create indoor or outdoor environment.

Calculation of the reverberation time and computer simulation for electroacoustics were made. A total of 10 speakers (One line array speaker for the proscenium, two lateral line arrays speakers and seven front speakers on the stage) were used. The reverberation time was 1.3s for the band 500 Hz, and optimum values (0.6 to 0.84) of Speech Intelligibility (STI) were obtained. The differences between minimum and maximum Sound Pressure Level (SPL) values were under 20 dB.

I am aware that not too long ago, I was a student they are now. For the first time and from this experience I could find how enriching is working with students who bring new perspectives to concepts that seemed already consolidated.

バンドンにあるGoa Beland +Jepang(オランダ軍、日本軍の防空壕)

バンドンにあるGoa Beland +Jepang(オランダ軍、日本軍の防空壕)
