Acoustical Letter - Acoustical Science & Technology journal

Speech at the Architectural Instittute of Japan (AIJ 2016)

This year, for the first time and together with Mitsuru Yabushita, I had the opportunity to give a speech in Japanese in the annual meeting of the Architectural Society of Japan (AIJ 2016). The meeting was held on 24th,25th and 26th of August in the Fukuoka University in Kyushu Island.

Our speeches were about the results obtained in measurements of impact sound insulation and vibration of a new type of high-performance ceiling with Helmholtz resonators. This work was conducted together, Syunpei Hirose, Hidehisa Sekine and Yosuke Yasuda from Kanagawa University, and Rie Tojo from Urban Renaissance Agency (UR).

A total of three kind of acoustic ceilings were made based in theoretical and unit experimental models of Helmholtz resonators (anti-resonances in 63 Hz and 125 Hz). Diameter, volume and pitches between the holes was different for each sample. For a fourth sample, the ceiling was constructed without resonators in order to compare with the other samples and validate its effectiveness. The effect of the Helmholtz resonators in the results of impact sound insulation was not as clear as expected due to the structure-borne sound transmitted from the floor to the walls. However, the effectiveness of the resonators in the vibration experiments results was clearly seen. In order to increase the acoustic insulation of the ceiling, the solid-borne sound of the wall should be reduced. In most of the cases the installation of the heating insulation in the outer walls instead of in the inner walls will help to reduce these vibration transmissions in the structure.

I am very grateful to Mitsuru Yabushita and Akiko Yabushita for their help and support.

MY EXPERIENCE PLAYING TAIKO

One thing I really like from the gypsy community in Spain, is that when there is something they like, they say: "That's very flamenco!"

The first time I listened Taiko was a year ago at the Kodo group concert. Kodo is one of the most relevant and important Japanese drum groups. Seeing their performance was like diving into a mixture of traditional rituals, with contemporary touches in which men and women participating accumulating all their culture in the “mass of their blood”, as occurs with flamenco. I was so excited and It sounded so flamenco that I had no doubts about starting learning it. For me, taiko represents the chaos of the accurate, the extreme limit of an emotion. What also caught my attention is that despite being so individual, is the image of a collective memory.

Now, I humbly can take part of this thanks to the support of my taiko group mates and the constant teachings of Umemura Mihoko. Umemura is a professional Taiko player, she stands out for being a member of “Dadadadan Tenko” group, one of the most famous and relevant taiko groups in Japan. Also, to my surprise, she speaks Spanish very good! We meet every week to play taiko in Asano Taiko studio, a special place for me because the studio was acoustically designed by my company, YAB Corporation.

Last 15th of May, the "Sukuramu 21" theatre in Kanagawa hold the 8th edition of the event "Kyowasai" in an evening full of taiko and Matsuri (festival) instruments performances. This was the first time I played taiko on the stage and in front of guests. The evening was very special because I felt totally supported by my mother who came from Spain to see the concert, my boss, co-workers and lots of friends. Another of many experiences of my Japanese life that I will never forget.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MY EXPERIENCE PLAYING NAGAUTA SHAMISEN

Since my first moment in Japan (four years ago) I have been fascinated by Japanese culture. The architecture, age-old  traditions and Japanese customs all contribute to a unique lifestyle that I wanted to partake in. Two years ago, as fate would have it, I met my boss -architect and expert in Kabuki playhouses- Mitsuru Yabushita. He is the reason that my interest for Japanese traditional music grew even greater.

Last year, as part of our research, we had the opportunity to see Kabuki in the Konpira Grand Theatre (Kanamaru-za) in Kotohira. That was the first time I listened to Nagauta shamisen. I was so amazed by the music that I had no doubts about starting to learn how to play it. I have been playing shamisen for a few months, and learning with Makoto sensei is without doubt adding something beautiful to this rewarding life experience. I can play Spanish guitar, but playing shamisen presents a major challenge. Shamisen is plucked with three fingers of the left hand, the “bachi” is used in the right hand to strike the strings on the delicate cat skin from what is made. What complicates this art a bit more for me is that regular chords seem to be absent, rhythms are "ma" (間) based and silences are very important parts of the songs.

Last 5th of June, I had the opportunity to participate with professional Nagauta shamisen players at the 11th International Hougaku Concert. I was so happy to be on the stage with my best friend and architect Helena Machin, also the fact that we were surrounded by our very good friends, made it an experience I will never forget.

----------
