Speech at the Spring Meeting of the Acoustical Society of Japan (ASJ 2016)

Title:
REAL-SCALE EXPERIMENTS ON DOUBLE FLOOR SYSTEM WITH HELMHOLTZ RESONATORS MADE OF LIGHT STEEL SQUARE PIPES
Measurement results of floor impact sound

This year, one more time, I had the opportunity to give a speech in the annual meeting of the Acoustical Society of Japan (ASJ 2016) which was held on 9th,10th and 11th March. This time, as a matter of chance, the conference was hosted in the Toin university of Yokohama, located in the beautiful neighbourhood of Aoba-ku, place where I live.

My speech was about the further development and improvement of the new type of high-performance double floor with Helmholtz resonators. This work was conducted together with Mr. Mitsuru Yabushita from YAB Corporation, Syunpei Hirose and Yosuke Yasuda from Kanagawa University, and Rie Tojo from Urban Renaissance Agency (UR).

The fact that a considerable number of apartment buildings constructed during the 60’s and 70’s seek to be reused, creates the need of renovation and modernization that conforms more closely to current acoustic standards. In most of cases an increase of the slab thickness is not the best solution due to an excess of weight, so that high-performance solutions for double floor are required. Four years ago, a new type of high-performance double floor based in the theory of Helmholtz resonators was invented. After testing different materials for the design of the resonators, (chipboard, cardboard, polyethylene, and plasterboard). From last year, and having as a primary objective a reduction of construction cost, light steel square bars with PVC pipes that worked as Helmholtz resonators have been used. Good results were obtained in samples with in vertical disposition of square bars due to the correct performance of Helmholtz resonators, however with the horizontal disposition of square bars, the results weren’t as good as expected due to the lack of rigidity in the lower surface. For this reason, in present work, square bars were joined underneath with particle board ensuring the lower surface rigidity. Previous PVC pipes used as resonators have been replaced holes drilled easily in the particle board.

Double floor with Helmholtz resonators: a) Longitudinal section,
b) Transverse section. Distances in mm

A total of four kind of double floors were made based in theoretical and unit experimental models of Helmholtz resonators *anti-resonances in 63 Hz and 125 Hz). Diameter, volume and pitches between the holes was different for each sample. For a fifth sample, Helmholtz resonators were covered in order to compare with the other samples and validate its effectiveness.

Double floor with Helmholtz resonators: full-scale samples consisted in 6 units (6 square bars per unit). Distances in mm
Promising results for impact sound insulation were obtained. Even if the flooring was hard type, results of the reduction of floor impact sound (ΔL) in Rubber Ball tests (simulates a child running) was 10. ΔL was 9 In Tire Machine tests (simulates a child jumping). For Tapping Machine tests (simulate the steps of an adult) however, the spectrum generated by the impact is lower in low frequencies, so the level of reduction was lower.

Some adjustments can be considered to obtain better results in Tapping Machine test (e.g. adjustment of the Helmholtz resonators resonance, replacing hardwood flooring with softwood flooring).

THE BIRTH OF THE HANAMICHI

My last contribution to the meeting of Wooden Playhouses Study Group on January 29th had a special relation with the Kabuki theater. (Wikipedia link of Kabuki?).

The Kabuki uses an extra stage section known as Hanamichi "花道" (literally, flowery path). A walkway platform that extends through the audience from the back of the theater to connect with the stage. The origin of Hanamichi contains various theories. Based on the article "The Birth of the Hanamichi" by Suwa Haruo and translated by Samuel L. Leiter, I wanted to clarify some of the various existing hypotheses to approach knowledge of the origin of this essential element of the Kabuki theater.

Thanks again to all members for giving me the opportunity to participate in this event and for sharing their experiences being a valuable contribution to my learning.

Flamenco performance spaces

Last October I was given the opportunity one more time, to accompany Mitsuru Yabushita to the Meeting of the Wooden Playhouses Study Group of the Japanese Association of Theatre and Entertainment Technology (JATET).
I was asked to make a presentation related with the art in my country, Spain, and particularly in Andalusia.

There are many expressions of art in Spain, but with no doubt, Flamenco is the most internationally known. Flamenco has literary and musical art forms that collect all the characteristics of the knowledge and feel of the Andalusian people, related with the songs, dances and guitar. In this seminar, I wanted to show all these values, making a brief review of historic documents including videos, as technical aspects as design and acoustics of “Tablaos”(places where Flamenco shows are performed). A humble contribution to disseminate the history of Flamenco.

During this Christmas holidays in Antequera, my home town, I could enjoy with my family and friends an example of the versatility and popularity of the flamenco dance and song of my homeland in an Andalusian farmhouse in the nature reserve of Laguna de Fuente Piedra.

As always, I would like to thank Mitsuru Yabushita and all JATET members for giving me the opportunity to participate in this exclusive and prestigious circle of culture enthusiasts.

Codex Barbès

Codex Barbès

Codex Barbès
