Speech at the Spring Meeting of the Acoustical Society of Japan (ASJ 2015)

----------

It’s been six months since I worked on YAB Corporation and I would have never imagined the huge variety of projects and challenges that we face every day, all each more "omoshiroi". Last great challenge where I had the opportunity to participate in, was to have my first experience as a speaker at the annual meeting of the Acoustical Society of Japan (ASJ 2015) which was held on 16th and 17th March.

The prestigious Chuo University in Tokyo was the perfect framework for hosting this event. Both interesting oral communications and posters were carried out in simultaneous conference rooms. They covered all the new aspects in the world of acoustics, like architectural acoustics, electroacoustic, ultrasound, noise control, vibration and music among others.

My speech was about the developing a new type of high-performance double floor with Helmholtz resonators. This work has been conducted together with Mr. Mitsuru Yabushita from YAB Corporation, Syunpei Hirose and Yosuke Yasuda from Kanagawa University, and Kazuhiro Watanabe from Urban Renaissance Agency (UR).

The fact that a considerable number of apartment buildings constructed during the 60’s and 70’s seek to be reused, creates the need of renovation and modernization that conforms more closely to current acoustic standards. In most of cases an increase of the slab thickness is not the best solution due to an excess of weight, so that high-performance solutions for double floor are required. Three years ago, a new type of high-performance double floor based in the theory of Helmholtz resonators was invented. After testing different materials for the design of the resonators, (chipboard, cardboard, polyethylene, and plasterboard). From now, and having as a primary objective a reduction of construction cost, light steel square pipes have been used. Based in theoretical and unit experimental models, promising results for impact sound insulation have been obtained. Even if the flooring was hard type, result of L-Number (Ln) in Tapping Machine tests (simulate the steps of an adult) was 48. In Rubber Ball tests (simulates a child running) Ln was 42. Ln in Tire Machine tests (simulates a child jumping) was 53. Furthermore, high values of the Reduction of Floor Impact Sound (ΔL) were obtained, exceeding in 10 for rubber ball source.

As well as every day, I am grateful to Mitsuru Yabushita and Akiko Yabushita, because without their guidance and confidence in me, it would not have been possible for me to enjoy this great and unique experience.

Hello everyone, this is Antonio Sanchez Parejo, Building Engineer and Master in Architectural Acoustics from the University of Granada (Spain). I was born in Antequera (Malaga), a beautiful and historical city located in the “heart” of Andalucia. Until now, my formation has been enriched with experiences living abroad. I studied one year in the Faculty of Architecture of YBL Miklós University in Budapest (2010-2011), one year in the College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University in Shanghai (2011-2012) and four months in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering of Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan. Furthermore I got the Confucius Institute Scholarship (1 year of Chinese language studies in Shanghai) and the Translating Chinese (Methods and Practice) Scholarship of the National Taiwan University in Taipei. Since 4 years, I am a member of the interdisciplinary (Architecture, Structures, Seismology and Physics) researching group SNADS (Signal and Numerical Analysis in Dynamical Systems) of the University of Granada, what made increase my interest in the Acoustic world. I have been more than four months living, learning and working in Japan in the architectural and acoustic design company YAB Corporation, where apart from surprising me the fast way I adapt and learn, it is being with no doubt the most important and rewarding moment of my life.

My life in Japan is full of unforgettable moments. One of these moments has been to take part in the last meeting of the Architecture Subcommittee of Theatre and Entertainment Techonology Association of Japan (JATET). In this meeting, I was given the opportunity to share experiences and opinions with very relevant people in the Japanese art and culture. I felt flattered when I was asked to introduce some aspects of the popular and cultural festivals of my country and I was surprised to find how such a distant countries, as Spain and Japan, share that many similarities.

Cordoba’s Courtyard Festival, Cadiz Carnival, Valencia Fallas and St John’s Eve bear strong similarities with the Japanese Festival of Tanabata in Sendai, Awa-Odori in Tokushima, Nebuta in Aomori and Daimonji in Kyoto. Furthermore, it is so interesting to see how the Holy Week processions and  Virgen del Carmen Festival in Malaga, are very similar to the Sanno Festival in Tokyo and Tenjin in Osaka.

I will always be grateful to Yabushita-san and all members of JATET for making me spend such an interesting and enriching evening.

SEPTEMBER 2014  KRAKOW  FORUM ACUSTICUM

Acoustical characteristics of preserved wooden style Kabuki theaters in Japan

オランダ人のM.J.B.
